It’s another rainy day here.
We started the morning by loading up the car with supplies for a project my daughter is working on at school. This included two very large boxes, craft supplies, paper, markers… all of this along with her backpack, raincoat (oh, wait she forgot that) and lunch box. As I approached the school, I could see the carline was backed up into the parking lot. Ugh.
Really? and all this rain… I hadn’t even had coffee yet. 😐
As we pulled into the school my daughter asked me… “Mom, I’m feeling overwhelmed – can we pull over and pray?”
Me: Wow. “Sure, we can do that.” And so we did.
We sat for maybe a minute or two, held hands and prayed. I pulled back into the carline, she jumped out, grabbed all her supplies and shuffled into school, despite the rain.
We ALL can get overwhelmed at times. Even our kids. What seems small to us, may actually be a big thing for them. STOP. Breathe. Pray. Take a break. Whatever it is you do. Learn what helps you and teach your child how to cope with stress.
How to Pray with Your Child: 3 steps that I use but make it your own.
1.) Practice prayer as a conversation. I have found this helps your child understand that this is a conversation with God.
2.) Allow your child to see you praying outside of the church. Sometimes I quietly sit in prayer (often in the car) allowing my kids to know that practicing prayer can happen anywhere.
3.) Start simple. I started with the Lords Prayer when they were young. I now add different prayers and incorporate our own.
It’s not always easy, sometimes there are tears of frustration and sometimes there are wins.
Either way, the days are long but the years are short and we have one shot at this parenting thing.
